„A child’s smile“ – our V98 Batteries with Jérôme Dolbert in Cambodia

Telling the story of extraordinary human engagements...

In 2017 we got to know the acknowledged French Director, Producer and Cinematographer Jérôme Dolbert at the Film Festival in Cannes. Having worked for some of Europe’s biggest and most well-known television networks and film production companies, he introduced us to his upcoming film project „A child’s smile“ about two charity organisations, lightening (female) childhood in Cambodia. We quickly believed in the importance of his film and offered to support the project with our batteries. So earlier this year, two of our V98 Li-Ion V-Mount batteries travelled to Cambodia...

„A child’s smile“ is a documentary about the actual situation of young children in Cambodia and img_9133two caritative organisations: The first one, „Happy Chandara - Toutes à l'école“, enables young under-privileged girls in Cambodia to go to school and find a way out of poverty, desease, abuse and prostitution. To become free women and educated mothers, to find good jobs in human surroundings. The documentary also shows the work of another organisation, „Pour Les Yeux du Monde“ – and the fight of physicians for disadvantaged children in poverty-stricken rural Cambodia. img_8559„Pour Les Yeux du Monde“ organizes seven 10-day missions with a hospital boat in Cambodia each year: For 10 days, a surgical team and student volunteers provide free medication, consultations, surgical interventions and low vision services to 900-1.000 disadvantaged patients. This means 6.000-8.000 consultations, 400-500 surgical interventions, and 1.500-2.000 pairs of glasses per year. These two caritative organizations have one important target in common: improving the situation for disadvantaged children in Cambodia and giving them the opportunity to learn and shape their own lives for a better future.

The shootings for Jérôme Dolbert’s documentary took place in little villages around Cambodia’s img_8301capital Phnom Penh, alongside the Bassac River. As one can imagine, the working conditions haven’t always been easy... Jérôme himself had to carry around 100 kg of equipment (camera, lenses, tripod, slider, drone, light, batteries,...) – mainly in busses, taxis, boats and Tuk-Tuks. Furthermore, temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and 80% humidity didn’t really lighten such moves...

But he experienced great help from local people all over the way: „Cambodians know how to overcome all problems by always keeping a smile. This was an amazing experience! With the precious help from a lot of Cambodian people, it was easier for me to enter slums, communicate with villagers, or even shoot in brothels. Communicating with teachers, students, doctors in the school and the boat was a lot easier of course, since we could talk in English or French.“

img_9616Apropos making things easier: This is exactly what Jérôme Dolbert seemed to like about the bebob V98 V-Mount batteries. „I could use them for everything and could always rely on them. The bebob V98 are strong, charge fast, last long and are even lighter than other batteries. Which also meant that they were very easy to carry – an enormous benefit during my field shootings! In short: These batteries have never let me down. They are really top of the line – excellent construction and great functionality.“ (Unfortunately, our new and ultra-compact Vmicro batteries haven’t been available for Jérôme Dolbert’s project yet – since these bebob newcomers are even a lot smaller and lighter than our normal V98 batteries!)

The documentary „A child’s smile“ will be broadcasted worldwide, starting in August 2019. We strongly hope that this film will be seen by a lot of interested people all over the world – and achieve awareness and support for the important engagement that it shows!
